Congratulations, graduates! It is that time of year when graduations celebrate a major accomplishments and the opportunities in the next phase. This is very true of families who graduate from Healthy Families.
Families become part of the Healthy Families program either during pregnancy or before a new baby turns 90-days old and the family can stay until that baby turns five! Everyone in the family: baby, mom, dad, siblings and grandparents work together with the Healthy Families program and their Family Support Specialist (FSS) to build the best family for their children.
In July, Jaiden and his family will graduate from Healthy Families after spending five years growing as a family and learning about the possibilities and opportunities in their community for this next chapter in their lives.
Martha, Jaiden’s mom, found Healthy Families when she started to experience symptoms of postpartum depression, something around 15% of moms experience after giving birth, and felt these five years flew by. But April, their Family Support Specialist didn’t just focus on Jaiden, she worked with Martha, Jaiden’s dad Jose Luis, and his big brother Jose Luis Jr.
“I enjoyed the way April focused on our entire family,” said Martha. “Because of Healthy Families, we are more aware of resources in our community and aren’t afraid to ask for help or to reach out to other programs.”
Above all, the relationship with April made everything else possible.
“I appreciate having her to just listen, never feeling pressured,” said Martha. “She was respectful and took time to talk about my other children and was flexible with our meeting times and locations when things got a bit busy at home.”
As Jaiden and his family plan their graduation with April, it will be a bittersweet celebration to say goodbye. But, Healthy Families will be part of their family for many years to come.
“Jaiden has gained confidence, and is willing to try lots of things,” said Martha. “And, in the end, Jaiden has gained a better mom.”
